Embracing True Service: St. Ignatius of Loyola's Guide to Purposeful Living
We've been exploring three attitudes that St. Ignatius of Loyola suggests for living with a sense of purpose and direction. In a previous post, we discussed the attitude of reverence towards God. Now, let's delve into the attitude of service towards God and others.
Understanding True Service
It's important to distinguish between service, servitude, and replacement. True service to God starts with the acknowledgment that we are not God, and the world is not ours to save. Attempting to replace God is a misstep. On the other hand, servitude, performed without freedom, is equally problematic. True service involves discernment and recognizing where we are best able to help.
The Balance of Serving Others
When serving others, we are not called to replace them or feel enslaved. True service finds the sweet spot where we look beyond ourselves and lend a hand. Replacing others by doing more for them than they do for themselves fosters toxic dependence. Feeling trapped leads to resentment and neglect of our own needs. True service is key to a balanced, fulfilling life.
Living Our True Calling
Serving others in the right way helps us live our true calling. Remember, Jesus came to serve, not to be served. Serving others allows us to respond to God's goodness, use our God-given gifts, and ultimately find ourselves and God. It's worth every ounce of effort to get it right.
