Embracing Praise in Relationships: St. Ignatius' Guide to Thriving Connections
In the previous post, we explored three attitudes that St. Ignatius of Loyola suggested as guiding posts for walking through life with a sense of purpose and direction. Rather than offering rigid rules, Ignatius proposes three attitudes in our relationship with God: Praise, Reverence, and Service. Previously, we examined what these attitudes mean in our relationship with God. Now, we will look at what an attitude of genuine praise may look like in our relationships with our fellow human beings.
Praise Towards God and Others
We mentioned that praise towards God involves living in constant recognition of His gifts, leading to a life of gratitude. Praising God might differ from praising our fellow human beings, as they are imperfect and sinful. However, if we can praise God who created these imperfect beings, we must also find goodness in them.
Finding what is good in others is crucial for positive conflict resolution and thriving relationships. It is important to note that offering genuine praise to others differs from adulation or flirtation; true praise doesn’t seek anything in return (like benefits or romantic attention). Instead, it acknowledges the good in the other person. An attitude of praise towards others is an open offer of relationship without any strings attached.
Living in Truth and Praise
Of course, we must live in truth, recognizing and addressing what is wrong or sinful to ensure our safety. However, starting every relationship with an attitude of praise can lead to a happy life and, most likely, great relationships. This approach fosters mutual respect, understanding, and positive interactions.
