Overcoming the Temptation of Feeling Unworthy in Prayer
Overcoming the Temptation of Feeling Unworthy in Prayer
Sometimes, when we start to pray, we might feel like we’re not someone God would care about. We feel too insignificant, and our sins seem too great. When this happens, it’s important to recognize it as a temptation. Here’s why:
1. God’s Love for Us:
First, feeling unworthy is an insult to God, who created us as we are. God loves us, not because of who we are, but because of who God is: God is love. The love within us is God’s love, and we must honor that.
2. The True Focus of Prayer:
Second, prayer is about “turning our mind to God.” If we’re preoccupied with thoughts of our own unworthiness, we’re focusing on ourselves rather than on God. Remember God’s promise: "When you call on me, I will answer you" (Jeremiah 29:12).
3. Jesus’ Example of Compassion:
Finally, when we are absorbed in self-doubt, we ignore what Jesus demonstrated. He fed the hungry, defended the woman caught in adultery, invited Thomas the Doubter to touch His wounds, and forgave Peter the Denier.
Turning to God in Prayer:
When we feel too miserable to pray, it’s crucial to turn to Him and ask for healing. We can be certain of this: He’s waiting to be asked.
