Fulfillment: Already Here But Not Yet
By Fr. Ron Gonzales, SJ
“There's gotta be more...I think to myself.” What is it that you seek? What are you looking for? When will you know that you've arrived? These are questions we've often pondered while on retreat. Fortunately, this time of year, both liturgically and externally, reminds us yet again that while we are on the way to heaven, we have yet to pass through that thin veil that separates us here in the physical from the spiritual world. Every year that passes, we come to know and experience far more than we did before. Many of the things that impressed us early on in life—fame, fortune, security—have been instead transformed into peace, hope, trust, and joy in the Resurrected Jesus, whom we have gradually come to know and love.
This Easter Season brings with it all of that and more. The flowers, lush grass, and vibrant trees once again remind us that while we are not there yet, we are closer than when we first started. As a prayer attributed to St. Thérèse of Lisieux states, "May you be content knowing you are a child of God..." Stay close to Jesus; the only ONE who will fully fulfill us in heaven.
