It’s Complicated
Relationship in General
by Fr. Ron Gonzales, SJ
If you use the social media app: Facebook, there is a place that designates our "relationship" status. I'm either in a relationship with a person often named or left blank. However, one of the more honest phrases often used is "It's complicated".
As I was pondering relationships in general (friendships, relatives, spouses, kids) I realized how much it takes to maintain and sustain these over a long period of time. Sometimes we inadvertently say something (not intending in many cases) to hurt someone. Other times our not connecting or calling regularly (inadvertent omissions and life gets busy) cause someone to feel unloved.
How much energy and effort it takes to maintain connections with just one person, now multiplied by many and one can think maybe I'll just be a hermit and live alone. However, being completely isolated is also not really a viable alternative for most of us who are social beings.
It is true relationships in general are complicated except one--Jesus. I realized long ago that I AM the one that makes it difficult. Jesus never abandons me, he never avoids me, he never cheats on me, he always forgives me, but above all he is patient with me as I slowly evolve from the often ungrateful and fickle loved sinner I am. With Jesus, spending a little time in prayer or in retreat goes a long way. Stay with Him always and do the best with earthly relationships.
